British Gypsum
Gypsum is a commercially important mineral used in the production of plaster, plasterboard, cement and other industrial processes.
Subsidence can affect properties that are built on or close to workings. For instance, waste from plasterboard production is often discarded by landfill on site and open–cast works are often backfilled when redundant.
This means any homebuyer proposing to purchase a property in an area of the country known to have current or past gypsum workings should obtain a gypsum report to alert them to any potential problems
Risk areas in the UK
Gypsum is mined in East Sussex, Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Cumbria, with the largest deposits found in East Sussex. Annually between 1.5-2 million tonnes are extracted from these areas of the country. Although now, due to cheaper labour costs, more gypsum is being imported from overseas and former sites could be reclaimed for housing.
